Scale up when you decide which gesture/pose you like!
To Scale up a piece, decide how big you want it and then you can calculate the size of the work.
If the study/maquette is 12inch tall and you would like for your larger work to be a 36inch tall piece, then you would measure each part of your maquette and multiply that number by 3 to get the scale up you desire. (I took a measurement of my kiln’s interior, so I made this one just big enough to fit inside it)
Be sure to take notes of your measurements and what the scale up is so that you are not doing a bunch of math every second.
Basic measurements to get:
- Base to top of work
- Base to Sternal notch
- Width of acromian processes (roughly, should width)
- Base to belly button
- Width of hips
- width of waist
- Width of rib cage
- width of sternal notch to c7 vertebrate (front to back of top of piece, base of the neck)
- width and height of all appendages (thighs, arms, etc.)
Then block in your work, use skewers to hold parts into place as you work. Add clay to the work as if it will be solid, take breaks to allow clay to stiffen a little because it may start to sink from the weight if its too wet.
Once you complete the blocking, you can begin to detail the work.
Hollow out…
You may choose not to hollow out the work but you will be waiting a long time for it to dry. Hollow out by creating holes where there isn’t much detail and patching up will be simple.
Now that its finished…
Make sure all of your holes are plugged up and complete detailing. You may use your maquette to guide your eye if you lost some detail along the way when hollowing out. Check your measurements and make sure it is right, the clay may have moved a little when you were hollowing out the piece. If you can, place it in the kiln at leather hard stage and allow it to sit in the kiln to dry for a little while.
