This body of work investigates the fleeting nature of the space in and around the body. Considering positive and negative space, a sense of presence and absence reveals a form in a simultanous state of compression and expansion. The works capture the human figure moving through a space, reflecting the evolving qualities the body suggests. They are rendered from live models and imagined circumstances, providing the viewer a site of resonance and curiosity. The artworks’ content explores capabilities of the amorphous form, time’s effect on growth, and how the body may intertwine with the space it occupies, materializing it. The gesture and fragmentation of the forms’ expressions navigates a temporality, in-between states of being, and the body’s relationship with space. The surfaces of each work implicates these qualities as they act as a document of time, as well as a material skin influenced by the interactions with the firing processes. My process begins with handbuilding techniques in clay with slab and coils, creating a hollow interior that provides an empty space within the figures. Working with clay gives me the flexibility to potentially convert the invisible substance of space into matter. Portions of the body begins to gradually dissipate, suggesting movement and the bodies blending into the space it engages. I have experimented with atmospheric firing methods to push the boundaries of how the space may be touching the body. This interaction that occurs through the firing process implicates the physical contact the body has with the space that is marking it, creating a material skin. I am also experimenting with layering washes, stains, and slips and firing in oxidation, to implicate this material contact with a different atmosphere. Both processes indicate a record of time, one by the kiln’s atmosphere and one by the artist’s hand. These processes allow me to investigate the questions surrounding my work such as, how is the body part of the space? How does the space of the body change relative to the space it occupies? How is the space coming into contact with the body? The pieces are residing in an ambiguous place as the body subtly shares hints of captured experiences while questioning the nature being.
